Why wont Google toolbar install for firefox 5?

it downloads but will not install.I am ussing the right google toolbar.|||It won't install because it isn't compatible. If you are using version 7.1.20101110 of the Google toolbar, then you will see from the release notes at http://googletoolbarhelp.blogspot.com/20鈥?/a> that it's only just be declared compatible with Fx 4 beta.|||It is incompatible with the Yahoo! toolbar as well, if you download it then it disables it.

It is obvious to me that 5 is not fit for use yet as it was "Beta", maybe still is, if not it ought to be. It has incompatibility problems,( I have tried it, does not work very well).

4 seems to work pretty well now though, although not as well as 3.6.16/17, but is a bit more modern in appearance.

I can only suggest that you revert to an older version by uninstalling it in the control panel and installing whichever older version that does actually work from the safe and free website in the link below. That is what I did, and it asks you if you need to save your settings, which you should.

You can then install toolbars.

Best of luck with it, Bob.|||Thats because the old installed version of googletoolbar has a file named install.rdf that declares the max supported version of firefox to be 4.0.

To fix this ,just open the install.rdf file with notepad and change maxVersion from 4.0.* to 6.* (see the image i've also uploaded)

Now, in order to find the correct install.rdf file do the following:

Go to folder : C:\Users\[your user name here]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Pr鈥?and search for the install.rdf file (im using windows 7)

Windows search will find many install.rdf files (one for each addon you have installed on firefox) so make sure that you find the install.rdf that has the line

Google Toolbar for Firefox

in it. For this install.rdf file just rename the max version as stated above , restart firefox..and vuala! Google toolbar is back!
